Preview of Bloom Ring
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Build a ring that expands and contracts
One link of an expanding ring: two 50 mm arms kinked at 150 degrees. Pin twelve pairs at their kinks and join the pairs end to end with M3 screws, and the ring breathes from a tight crown to a ring twice as wide when you pull it open. A kinetic centrepiece and a lesson in angulated scissors.

By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Twist stacked discs into a changing sculpture
A sculpture you play with: oval discs with an off-centre hole thread onto an 8 mm dowel. Turn each a few degrees past the last and the stack twists into a helix; push them about and it becomes a wave, a fan or a column. The Swivel Post socket makes a ready base.

Preview of Tumbling Tiles
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Flip a cascade of photos with one tilt
A Jacob's ladder for photos: six framed tiles joined by ribbon lattice so that tipping the top tile makes the next seem to cascade down the chain, flipping each picture over. Glue three 10 mm ribbons per joint, alternating sides; the recess holds a 66 x 91 mm print.

Preview of Gyre Lantern
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Fan ribs into a hanging globe lantern
A lantern that folds flat: twelve crescent ribs bolt together through the eyes at both tips. Closed, it is a single 214 mm crescent; spin the ribs round the axis and they open into a globe that hangs from its top bolt around a battery fairy light, casting a striped shadow.

Preview of Pantograph Arm
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Copy and enlarge drawings with a linkage
The bar of a printable pantograph, the drawing copier: bolt four into a parallelogram, pin one corner to the board, follow a picture with a pointer at one joint and a pencil at the other draws it larger. Eight holes at 30 mm pitch let the joints move for 2x or 3x copies; print two at full and two at half width.

Preview of Automaton Stage
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Turn a crank to make cam-driven figures move
The frame of a cam automaton: push an 8 mm dowel through the side holes as a camshaft, thread on three Helix Spindle discs printed at half size, and drop 6 mm dowels through the top holes so they ride on the cams. Turn the crank and the rods bob in sequence, ready to carry paper or printed figures.

Preview of Kapok
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Stand a flute or recorder upright on its foot joint
A stand for a flute or alto recorder rooted like a rainforest kapok tree. Six plank buttresses flare from the trunk, so a tall, top-heavy instrument stands on a wide footprint that weighs little; the 17 mm peg goes up inside the foot joint and the collar takes its rim.

Preview of Living Stone
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Stand a place card or photo in a stone fissure
A place card holder modelled on lithops, the living stones of southern Africa: two fleshy lobes split by a fissure where new leaves grow. The fissure is the slot, so each guest card appears to sprout from the stone, and the open lobes take a few pebbles for weight or a sugared almond for each guest.

Preview of Sprout Halo
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Hold an avocado stone over water to sprout
A collar for growing an avocado from its stone without toothpicks. Rest the ring on any glass 70 to 85 mm across, press the stone into the centre pointed end up and the three tongues grip it with its base in the water. The slit lets the ring flex as the stone splits and the root grows.

Preview of Physarum Maze
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch a slime mould solve a maze
A maze for the slime mould that out-planned Tokyo’s railway engineers. Pour a thin layer of agar, put a crumb of Physarum at the start and oat flakes at the finish, and close the lid; over a few days the yellow mould explores every lane, then withdraws from the dead ends and leaves one vein along the shortest route.
