How to print your model
From the file you downloaded to a finished print in 5 easy steps. Never printed before? Start here.
-
Download your model
Press Download in SO3D. If you get a .zip file, unzip it first (double-click it on most computers).
-
Open it in your slicer
A slicer is the free app that turns your model into instructions for your printer. Drag the .stl or .3mf file into it.
-
Pick simple settings
PLA filament, 0.2 mm layers, 15% infill and supports off. That works for almost every SO3D organizer.
-
Slice it
Press Slice. The app shows the layers, how long the print takes and how much filament it uses.
-
Print and watch the first layer
Send it to your printer and watch the first layer go down. If that looks good, the rest usually does too.
Where to click in your slicer
Pick the app you use. Button names can change a little between versions, but they’re always close to these.
Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer
- Drag the file onto the plate, or use File → Import. If it asks about a 3MF made by another app, choose to load just the geometry.
- On the left, pick your printer and your filament (for example “Generic PLA”).
- Choose a 0.20 mm process (often called “Standard”). Under Strength, set Sparse infill density to 15%.
- Under Support, leave Enable support off.
- Press Slice plate (top right), check the preview, then Print plate. Or export it to the SD card.
PrusaSlicer
- Drag the file into the window, or use File → Import.
- On the right, pick your printer, a 0.20 mm print setting (such as “0.20mm QUALITY”) and your PLA filament.
- Set Supports to None and Infill to 15%.
- Press Slice now (bottom right) and check the preview.
- Press Export G-code to save it to an SD card or USB stick, or Send to printer if yours is connected.
UltiMaker Cura
- Click the folder icon (top left) or drag the file into the window.
- Make sure your printer and PLA are chosen at the top.
- Open the print settings panel (top right): choose a 0.2 mm profile (often “Standard Quality”), set Infill to 15% and leave Support unticked.
- Press Slice (bottom right) and check the preview.
- Press Save to Disk or Save to Removable Drive, or Print over network if your printer is connected.
If something goes wrong
Most first-print problems are quick to fix.
It won’t stick to the bed
Wash the plate with warm soapy water (fingerprints stop plastic sticking) and dry it. Make sure the plate is the right way up and the bed is heated.
The corners lift up
Turn on a brim in your slicer (a thin extra edge around the bottom) and keep the room free of drafts.
It’s stringy or hairy
Damp filament is the usual cause. Keep it in a sealed bag with silica gel, or dry it. Choosing the right filament type in the slicer helps too.
It’s too big for my printer
Go back to SO3D and make it a little smaller, or use Small in Beginner mode. The slicer shows red or grey if it doesn’t fit.
For kids: print with a grown-up. The nozzle and bed get very hot. Don’t touch them while printing, and wait for the bed to cool before you take your print off.
