Preview of Tortoise fridge-hibernation box
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Hibernate a tortoise safely in a vented box in a dedicated fridge
Many reptile vets now recommend hibernating Mediterranean tortoises in a dedicated fridge, because it holds a steady 5 degrees where a garage or shed swings from freezing to warm. This box sits on the fridge shelf with a bed of soil or shredded paper; the vents on both sides let fresh air in, and the lid lifts off for the weekly weigh-in and to open the door for air. DO NOT DISTURB is raised on the front.

Preview of Mirror-therapy box
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Trick the brain with a mirror for phantom-limb pain and stroke recovery
Mirror therapy was invented by the neuroscientist V. S. Ramachandran. Both hands go in through the front holes, with a mirror standing in the slot between them, facing the good hand. Looking at the mirror, the patient sees the good hand moving where the hidden hand should be, and the brain is fooled into feeling the hidden limb move freely. It is used for phantom-limb pain, stroke rehabilitation and complex regional pain syndrome.

Preview of Ocean-wave drum
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Tilt a sealed drum of beads slowly to hear surf breaking on a beach
Ocean drums are an old sound-effects trick, used in theatres and music therapy. A handful of steel beads lies inside a wide, flat drum. Tilt it slowly and the beads roll across the wave-ridged floor in a long rushing hiss, exactly like a wave running up the sand; tip it back and the wave draws away. Shake it for rain, roll it for a storm. Children love it, and it is wonderfully calming at bedtime.

Preview of Spin-dial dog treat puzzle
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Hide treats in eight bays under a dial the dog noses round to find them
A brain game for dogs. Drop a treat into each of the eight bays and put the dial on top: it has a single window, so only one bay is open at a time. The dog has to work out that nudging the dial round with nose or paw reveals the next treat. Ten minutes of sniffing and thinking tires a dog out more than a long walk. Leave some bays empty to make it harder.

Preview of Gummy-bear osmosis lab
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch gummy bears grow, shrink or dissolve in four liquids overnight
Put one gummy bear on the millimetre grid in each bay and measure it, then cover them with plain water, salty water, sugary water and vinegar. By morning the water bear has swollen to twice its size as water rushes in through its skin by osmosis, the salty and sugary ones barely change, and the vinegar bear has started to dissolve. Measure them on the grid again and record the results. A classic science experiment in a neat tray.

Preview of Smartphone projector with focus slots
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Project a phone screen onto a wall through a magnifying lens
A shoebox cinema, done properly. A magnifying lens fits over the round front port, and the phone stands upright in one of four numbered focus slots inside. Moving it back a slot focuses the picture on the wall like a slide projector, with no sliding parts. The lid blacks out the box so the image is as bright as possible. Lights off, film on.

Preview of Stereoscope card viewer
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: See stereo photo cards in 3D through two lens ports
A modern take on the Victorian stereoscope. You look through two lens ports set the width of your eyes apart, a centre septum stops each eye seeing the other picture, and a stereo card slides into the slot at the back. Two flat photos taken a step apart pop into 3D. Make your own cards with any phone by shooting, stepping sideways and shooting again.

Preview of Giant matchbox keepsake
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Give a gift that slides out of a giant matchbox
Everyone knows how a matchbox opens, so a giant one is a gift box with a built-in moment: push the drawer and the present slides out. It is sized for jewellery, a watch, a message or tickets. OPEN ME is raised on the drawer end.

Preview of Egg-drop challenge pod
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Protect a raw egg in a drop test with rubber-band suspension and a parachute ring
The classic school engineering challenge, turned into a reusable test rig. The egg sits in a round inner cradle, and the holes all over the walls let you thread rubber bands across the pod to hang it like a hammock. Fill the gap with your own crumple zone: straws, foam or popcorn. The ring on the lid takes a parachute. Drop it down the stairwell, open it up and see whether your design held, then change one thing and drop again.

Preview of Family chore turntable
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Rotate household chores between family members every week
No more arguing about whose turn it is. Each bay holds a family member's name token, and each side of the box names a chore: DISHES, BINS, PETS, TIDY. Every week, a quarter turn on the ball-bearing base moves everyone on to the next job. It is fair, visible and spun by the children themselves.
