Ocean-wave drum

Tilt a sealed drum of beads slowly to hear surf breaking on a beach

Ocean drums are an old sound-effects trick, used in theatres and music therapy. A handful of steel beads lies inside a wide, flat drum. Tilt it slowly and the beads roll across the wave-ridged floor in a long rushing hiss, exactly like a wave running up the sand; tip it back and the wave draws away. Shake it for rain, roll it for a storm. Children love it, and it is wonderfully calming at bedtime.
