Egg-drop challenge pod

Protect a raw egg in a drop test with rubber-band suspension and a parachute ring

The classic school engineering challenge, turned into a reusable test rig. The egg sits in a round inner cradle, and the holes all over the walls let you thread rubber bands across the pod to hang it like a hammock. Fill the gap with your own crumple zone: straws, foam or popcorn. The ring on the lid takes a parachute. Drop it down the stairwell, open it up and see whether your design held, then change one thing and drop again.

What’s in it

  • Rectangular, 120 × 120 × 120 mm, with 2.4 mm walls
  • Raised text: “FRAGILE”, “DROP TEST”
  • 3 patterned wall panels (cut-out)
  • Lift-off lid (prints separately)

How to print it

Cross three or four rubber bands through opposite wall holes to hang the egg in the cradle; tie a carrier-bag parachute to the lid ring.

Prints as shown on its floor, no supports. The lid prints as a separate part, top down.

Filament: at most about 290 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $5.79 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).

Questions

What size is the egg-drop challenge pod model?

The egg-drop challenge pod model measures 120 × 120 × 120 mm (width × depth × height). You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

No. Cross three or four rubber bands through opposite wall holes to hang the egg in the cradle; tie a carrier-bag parachute to the lid ring. Prints as shown on its floor, no supports. The lid prints as a separate part, top down.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 290 g of PLA (234 cm³ printed solid), roughly $5.79 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

How many parts does it print as?

2 parts. The download lays each part flat in its best print position: Download STL gives one file per part, Download 3MF puts them all on one plate.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
