By Krypto

MAIN PURPOSE: Serve sweets, cupcakes or treats on three tiers
Three round trays (150, 130 and 110 mm) with a knurled diamond grip all the way round, on screw-in columns, topped with a heart loop to carry it by. For sweets, cupcakes, jewellery or bits on a desk. Every part prints separately and screws together.

Preview of Alignment-puzzle money box
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Drop a coin through three turning layers that only let it fall when every hole lines up
A money box that has to be solved before it will take your money. The coin slot in the cap sits over three layers, each with a single coin hole in a different corner. Lift each layer, turn it a quarter, and put it back until all the holes stack up under the slot; get it right and the coin clatters all the way down into the bank. Get it wrong and it stops on a layer, rattling. To empty it, lift everything off.

Preview of Pachinko decision board
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Drop a marble past the bumpers and let it decide: YES, NO, MAYBE or AGAIN
For decisions nobody can agree on. Lean the board back, drop a marble in at the top, and it bounces off two rows of bumpers before landing in one of four bays: YES, NO, MAYBE or AGAIN. Because each bumper sends it left or right by chance, the middle bays come up more often than the outer ones, just like a Galton board. Relabel the bays for dinner choices, chores or who goes first.

Preview of Junior forensic lab
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Dust and match fingerprints and unmask a pen with ink chromatography
Two classic detective techniques in one tray. Dust a glass with cocoa, lift the print with clear tape, stick it on a card and compare it with the ARCH, LOOP and WHORL patterns engraved in the bays. Then solve the mystery note: dot ink from each suspect's black pen near the bottom of coffee-filter strips, hang them from a skewer across the INK trough with their tips in water, and watch each ink split into its own bands of colour. The pen whose colours match the note is the culprit.

Preview of Windowsill Aeolian harp
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Let the wind play an eerie chord on strings stretched over a sound box in an open window
The Aeolian harp was a Romantic-era wonder: a box of strings placed in a half-open sash window that the draught plays by itself. Wind passing over a string makes it vibrate in shimmering overtones, rising and falling with the gusts, a sound Coleridge wrote a poem about. String this sound box with fishing line over its two bridges, all tuned to one low note, and lay it across an open window. On a breezy day it sings a ghostly chord without anyone touching it.

Preview of Spherification caviar kit
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Make bursting pearls of juice by dripping alginate into a calcium bath
In 2003 the elBulli kitchen discovered spherification: drip juice mixed with a little alginate (from seaweed) into a calcium bath, and each drop instantly grows a thin jelly skin while staying liquid inside. Load the syringes standing in the rack, drip mango, balsamic or cola into the BATH, lift the pearls into the RINSE, then spoon them into the SERVE bay. They pop on the tongue like caviar, a bit of modernist cooking for any home kitchen.

Preview of Micrometeorite hunting kit
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Find real space dust in your roof gutter with a wash tray, a magnet sleeve and a loupe
Tonnes of space dust land on Earth every day, and in 2017 the amateur scientist Jon Larsen proved you can find it on city rooftops. Scoop sludge from a gutter, WASH it in water and pour off the mud, DRY it, then pass the MAGNET sleeve through it: most micrometeorites contain iron, so they cling to it. Pull the magnet out over the FIND bay and the grains drop free. Under a 60x loupe, look for tiny shiny spheres with a pattern of crystal stripes, 4.6-billion-year-old visitors from space.

Preview of Crystal-radio chassis
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Build a radio that needs no battery and plays AM stations from the radio waves alone
A radio with no battery, no plug and no power at all: the radio waves themselves drive the earpiece. Wind a coil on the tall tube, screw the aerial, ground, diode and earpiece wires to the six terminal holes, and slide a wire along the coil to tune in. This is how people listened in the 1920s, and how soldiers built "foxhole radios" from razor blades in the Second World War. It is quiet and magical: a voice from far away out of nothing.

Preview of Air-pruning seedling cell
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Grow seedlings whose roots branch at the slotted walls instead of circling the pot
In a solid pot, roots hit the wall and circle round and round, and plants struggle after transplanting. In this cell, the walls are full of tall slots: when a root tip reaches the air at a slot, it dries and stops, and the plant sends out new side roots instead. The result is a dense, fibrous root ball that grabs the soil the moment it is planted out. Nurseries call it air-pruning; it is ideal for trees, tomatoes and anything with a long taproot.

Preview of Strawberry DNA extraction lab
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Pull visible strands of DNA out of a strawberry with soap, salt and cold alcohol
You can see DNA with your own eyes. MASH a strawberry in a bag with a spoon of washing-up liquid and a pinch of salt (the soap breaks open the cells, the salt clumps the DNA), pour it through a coffee filter in the FILTER cup, then pour the juice into a test tube in the rack. Trickle ice-cold rubbing alcohol down the side of the tube: a white, cloudy, stringy layer rises up through it, the strawberry's DNA, which you can spool out on a stick in the STIR bay.
