Strawberry DNA extraction lab

Pull visible strands of DNA out of a strawberry with soap, salt and cold alcohol

You can see DNA with your own eyes. MASH a strawberry in a bag with a spoon of washing-up liquid and a pinch of salt (the soap breaks open the cells, the salt clumps the DNA), pour it through a coffee filter in the FILTER cup, then pour the juice into a test tube in the rack. Trickle ice-cold rubbing alcohol down the side of the tube: a white, cloudy, stringy layer rises up through it, the strawberry's DNA, which you can spool out on a stick in the STIR bay.

What’s in it

  • Rectangular, 170 × 110 × 35 mm, with 2.4 mm walls
  • 1 divider
  • 3 holes in the floor
  • Engraved text: “MASH”, “STIR”, “FILTER”
  • 2 more bases built on (Bases B–C)
  • Base B: round, Ø 80 mm, 60 mm tall (beside)
  • Base C: rectangular, 36 × 110 mm, 45 mm tall (beside)

How to print it

You need dish soap, salt, a coffee filter and ice-cold rubbing alcohol (adults handle the alcohol). Strawberries have 8 copies of each chromosome, so they give a lot of DNA.

Prints as shown on its floor, no supports.

Filament: at most about 131 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $2.63 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).

Questions

What size is the strawberry DNA extraction lab model?

The strawberry DNA extraction lab model measures 170 × 110 × 35 mm (width × depth × height). That is Base A; 2 more bases are built on. You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

No. You need dish soap, salt, a coffee filter and ice-cold rubbing alcohol (adults handle the alcohol). Strawberries have 8 copies of each chromosome, so they give a lot of DNA. Prints as shown on its floor, no supports.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 131 g of PLA (106 cm³ printed solid), roughly $2.63 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
