Preview of Nordic ice-lantern mould
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Freeze a flower-shaped ring of ice to hold a candle on a winter night
In Finland and Sweden people line paths with ice lanterns on winter nights. Fill the ring between the two walls of this flower-shaped mould with water (add berries, leaves or petals for colour), freeze it outside or in the freezer, then dip it in warm water and the ice ring slips out. Stand it on the snow or a plate over a tealight and it glows from inside. The petal-shaped walls make the ice thicker in some places and thinner in others, so the light glows unevenly, like real frosted glass.

Preview of Floating-needle compass bowl
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Make a working compass from a needle, a magnet and a bowl of water
The compass the first sailors used. Stroke a sewing needle along a magnet thirty times in one direction, push it through a thin slice of cork and float it in the bowl. With nothing to stop it, the needle swings round and settles pointing north and south. Turn the bowl until the raised N lines up with the needle's north end, and the other directions are read straight off the floor. It also shows children that the Earth itself is a magnet.

Preview of Box-breathing finger tracer
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Trace a square track with a fingertip to pace box breathing
Box breathing (in for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four) calms nerves before exams and meetings, but counting is hard when you are anxious. This palm-sized tray gives your fingertip a square channel to trace, one side per breath stage, with IN, HOLD, OUT and HOLD on each side. Your finger keeps the rhythm so your head doesn't have to.

Preview of Saguaro-rib cachepot
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Shade a potted plant with ribs that cast their own shadows, like a cactus
Saguaro cacti survive desert sun partly because their deep pleats shade their own skin. This cachepot borrows the trick: deep vertical ribs round the outside mean much of the surface is always in shadow, so the nursery pot inside stays cooler on a hot balcony. It also makes a striking sculptural pot.

By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Slide coins into scoring zones on a desktop shuffleboard
Table shuffleboard shrunk to a desk: slide coins from the notched end and try to stop them in the 1, 2 or 3 zones engraved at the far end without falling off. Knock your opponent's coin out of the 3 and you have the classic pub game during a lunch break.

Preview of Cat scratcher refill tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Hold replaceable corrugated cardboard for a cat to scratch
Cardboard scratchers are cats' favourites but you throw the whole thing away when it is worn. This tray is the permanent part: pack it with strips cut from delivery boxes and the cat has a fresh scratcher for nothing. The scooped ends make it easy to tip the shredded strips out, and SCRATCH is raised on the side next to a paw.

Preview of Three-water solar still
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Turn salty, muddy and inky water into clean drops with sunshine
The desert-survival trick as a windowsill experiment. Pour salt water, muddy water and inky water into the three outer bays, stretch cling film over the rim and put a pebble in the middle. The sun evaporates the water, it condenses on the film, runs down to the low point under the pebble and drips into the centre cup clear and fresh, while the salt, mud and ink stay behind. The water cycle, made visible in one sunny afternoon.

Preview of Name-stick picker
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Pick a pupil's name at random from lolly sticks, then move it to DONE
Teachers draw names from a cup of lolly sticks to pick who answers, but the same few sticks keep coming up. This picker has two sides: PICK and DONE. A name moves across once picked, so everyone gets a turn before anyone gets two. It is fair, and children can see that it is.

Preview of Library-book home bay
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Give library books one home so they go back by the due date
Library fines happen because borrowed books scatter round the house. This bay is where every library book lives when it isn't being read, with the due date in the label slot on the front. On return day, everything is in one place.

Preview of Cyanotype sun-print frame
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Press cyanotype paper and objects flat under glass in the sun
A frame for making cyanotypes, the blue sun prints. Coated paper lies on the floor with leaves or lace on top, and a sheet of glass rests on ledges round all four walls to press everything flat. Finger notches front and back lift the glass off without smudging. Ten minutes in the sun, rinse, and the print turns Prussian blue.
