By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Play cornhole on a tabletop with coins or caps

Preview of Baking-soda volcano with fluted lava slopes
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Make a foaming volcano erupt
A science-fair volcano: a crater cup on a tall fluted cone. Put baking soda and a drop of washing-up liquid and food colouring in the crater, pour in vinegar, and the "lava" foams over the rim and runs down the grooves of the slopes.

Preview of Fin-stand pen and tape shelf
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort pens, tape and clips along the desk edge
A long shelf with two dividers carried on a single wedge-shaped fin down the middle, so it sits steadily and leaves room underneath. Pens, tape and clips each get a bay.

Preview of Footprint tracking tunnel
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Find out what visits the garden at night from the inky footprints it leaves
Ecologists find out which animals live in an area with tracking tunnels, and this is a garden-sized one. Turn it over so the floor becomes the roof, slide a strip of white card underneath with an inked sponge across the middle and a dab of bait in the centre, and leave it along a hedge or wall overnight. Anything that walks through, such as mice, voles, shrews, beetles or slugs, steps in the ink and leaves a trail of tiny footprints on the card. In the morning, match them to an identification guide.

Preview of Two-cup water level
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Carry a level line across a room or round a corner with two cups and a tube of water
Builders levelled the pyramids and the first houses with nothing but water, and it still beats a bubble level over long distances. Join two of these cups with any length of clear tube and fill them halfway: the water surface in both cups always sits at exactly the same height, wherever you put them. Hold one against your mark, then carry the other across the room, round a corner or to the far end of a fence, and mark where its water settles. Perfect for shelves, fences, patios and tiles.

Preview of Vortex air cannon
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Fire invisible rings of air across a room to knock over paper cups
Tap the stretchy top of this box and a spinning doughnut of air shoots out of the round hole in the side, holds together across the room and knocks over a paper cup or blows out a candle three metres away. It is a vortex ring, the same thing as a smoke ring or a dolphin's bubble ring. Fill the box with mist from a humidifier or incense (with an adult) and you can see the rings wobble through the air.

Preview of Tie-dye spiral plate
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Twist a T-shirt into a spiral and dye six clean colour wedges on a ribbed plate
The classic tie-dye spiral needs the shirt twisted into a flat disc and squirted with one colour per wedge, which usually happens on a soggy bin bag. This plate makes it tidy. Twist the damp shirt round a fork in the centre, then lay it so the six low ribs underneath line up with your rubber bands: each wedge gets its own colour, the ribs keep the dyes from running into each other underneath, and the rim catches the drips. Unwrap it next day to a crisp six-colour spiral.

Preview of Earwig pest-control hotel
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: House earwigs in fruit trees so they eat the aphids overnight
Earwigs are night hunters of aphids, codling-moth eggs and other pests, and fruit growers have hung straw-filled pots in their trees for centuries to keep them close. Fill this hexagonal hotel with straw, hang it open end down from a cane or branch in an apple, plum or pear tree, and earwigs move in to hide by day and hunt by night. Move it to wherever the aphids are worst. (Keep it out of dahlias, which earwigs like to nibble.)
