Footprint tracking tunnel
Find out what visits the garden at night from the inky footprints it leaves
Ecologists find out which animals live in an area with tracking tunnels, and this is a garden-sized one. Turn it over so the floor becomes the roof, slide a strip of white card underneath with an inked sponge across the middle and a dab of bait in the centre, and leave it along a hedge or wall overnight. Anything that walks through, such as mice, voles, shrews, beetles or slugs, steps in the ink and leaves a trail of tiny footprints on the card. In the morning, match them to an identification guide.
