Preview of Water-drop splash photo rig
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Film crowns and jets of water in slow motion as drops fall into a pool
High-speed photographers spend thousands on splash rigs; this one uses the slow-motion mode on your phone. Water drips steadily from a tiny hole in the cup, held high above the pool on a screw-in column, and each drop that lands throws up a crown of water and then a jet that shoots back up. The phone stands in the slot at the pool's edge, perfectly still and at drop level. Add food colouring to the pool, milk to the dripper, and play the clips back frame by frame.

Preview of Venn diagram snack bowl
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Serve three snacks in overlapping circles whose overlaps hold the mixes
Three round bowls overlap like a Venn diagram, and the crossing walls split them into seven bays: one for each snack on its own, three lens-shaped bays where two of them meet, and a little triangle in the middle where all three meet. SWEET, SALTY and SPICY are engraved in the floors. Fill the overlaps with the mixes (chocolate pretzels, chilli chocolate, spicy crisps) and let the table argue about what belongs where. Relabel it for any three things you like.

Preview of Tip-jar war
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Let customers vote with their tips between two rival answers
Baristas know a tip jar that asks a question fills faster. Two chambers sit side by side under one slotted top, with CATS on one side and DOGS on the other, and windows down the front show which pile is winning. Customers vote with every coin, and the rivalry keeps them coming back. Stick new labels on for tea or coffee, summer or winter, pineapple on pizza or not.

Preview of Fibonacci golden-rectangle desk tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk things into squares that grow by the Fibonacci sequence
A desk tray built from the Fibonacci sequence: squares of 8, 5, 3, 2, 1 and 1 units spiral inward and fit exactly into a golden rectangle, the proportion of the Parthenon and the nautilus shell. The big square takes a notebook, the next a phone, then a stack of sticky notes, then cards, and the two tiny squares hold SIM pins and memory cards. Each bay has its number engraved in the floor, so the spiral reads as you clear it.

Preview of Meshing gear-train desk caddy
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk tools into three gear-shaped pots whose teeth really mesh
Three proper spur gears, each with ten teeth, stand in a row with their teeth genuinely meshed, as if they were about to turn each other. The tall one holds pens, the middle one scissors and rulers, and the short one clips and erasers. It looks like a piece of a giant clock on the desk, and it makes a great gift for an engineer.

Preview of Coin-toss bell-curve tower
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch a bell curve build up, one bead for every shake of eight coins
Shake eight coins in the front tray, count the heads, and drop a bead into that column, from 0 to 8. Do it fifty times and the beads build a bell curve you can see through the clear walls: 4 heads stands tallest because there are 70 ways to get it, 3 and 5 come close behind, and 0 or 8 heads almost never happens (1 way in 256). It is the binomial distribution, the maths behind the famous Galton board, built by hand one shake at a time.

Preview of Lo Shu magic-square snack tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Serve snacks in nine bays numbered so every line adds up to 15
According to legend, a turtle climbed out of the Luo river 4,000 years ago with this pattern on its shell: the numbers 1 to 9 in a square where every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Put that many sweets, nuts or grapes in each bay. Whoever picks any straight line of three gets exactly 15. For a puzzle, empty it and ask a child to put the numbers back so the magic still works.

Preview of Cookie moon-phase tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Scrape sandwich cookies into the Moon's phases and lay them round the Earth
Why does the Moon change shape? Twist apart eight sandwich cookies and use a spoon to scrape the cream into each phase: none left for the NEW moon, a thin crescent, half for FIRST quarter, nearly all, all of it for FULL, and back again to LAST quarter. Drop them into the wells in order round EARTH, with the new moon nearest the SUN on the front. The tray shows that the Moon is always half lit by the Sun, and the phase is just how much of that lit half we see from Earth. Then eat the evidence.

Preview of Grow-tall savings tower
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Save coins in a money box that grows a level taller as each one fills
Saving is easier when you can see it grow. Coins drop through the slot in the top cap and pile up from the bottom, visible through the clear walls. When the coins reach the top of a level, add another one underneath the cap: the tower literally gets taller as the savings grow. Write the goal on the cap with a marker, and lift the levels apart to count up.

Preview of Linnaeus flower-clock planter
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Plant twelve flowers that open at different hours to tell the time
In 1751 the botanist Carl Linnaeus proposed a clock made of flowers: plant species that open (or close) at known hours in a circle, and you can tell the time by which ones are open. Each of the twelve outer bays is marked with an hour from 6 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon; plant it with a flower that opens then (goat's-beard at 6, African marigold at 7, ice plant at 10, star of Bethlehem at 11, scarlet pimpernel at 2, four o'clocks at 4), and the four middle bays take a sundial or herbs. Each sunny day the flowers open round the clock.
