Lay the corner on your point and read the six-figure grid reference straight off the notched edges: 4 mm steps for 100 m on 1:25 000 maps along one edge, 2 mm steps for 1:50 000 maps along the other, with every fifth notch longer.

Lay a ski pole down the slope, set the straight edge on it and let a cord with a nut hang from the corner slot: the notches read 25 to 50 degrees, with long marks at 30 and 45, so you know when a slope is steep enough to avalanche.

MAIN PURPOSE: Check crabs and lobsters against minimum size
Hold the gauge across the shell: a brown crab that fits inside the 140 mm notch, or a lobster carapace inside the 87 mm notch, is undersize and goes back. Check your local minimum sizes; the notches are easy to edit.

Stand a 230 g screw-thread gas canister in the ring and the three arms spread its footprint to 216 mm, so a top-mounted stove with a full pan no longer topples on uneven ground. Weighs a few grams and nests round the canister in the pot.

MAIN PURPOSE: Add a tie-out point anywhere on a tarp
Push a pebble under the tarp edge where you need a tie-out, feed the fabric bump through the round hole and slide it into the slot: the pebble is trapped, and the line on the end hole can take full tension. A new anchor anywhere, no grommet needed.

Slip the 4 mm blade between the pads whenever the wheel is out of the bike: a squeezed lever can no longer push the pistons together, the classic mistake after a car or plane trip. The ring hangs it on a key ring or the caliper.

Push the three teeth into a main groove of the tyre: if the 1.6 mm tooth bottoms out with the bar touching the tread, the tyre is at the UK and EU legal limit; the 3 mm and 4 mm teeth show when to start shopping for winter and summer tyres.

Screw it to the garage wall through the keyholes and park the Type 2 plug nose down in the coved cup: the pins stay out of rain, grit and spider webs, the cable hangs straight instead of lying in a puddle, and the drain hole lets condensation out.
