Preview of Archimedes float scale
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Weigh letters, spices or coins by how deep a cup floats in a bowl of water
No batteries, no springs, just Archimedes: a floating cup sinks until it has pushed aside its own weight in water. Because this cup is exactly 40 x 40 mm, every gram you add sinks it 0.625 mm, so the lines on the side are 20 g apart. Float it in a jug, add rice as ballast until the water sits on the 0 line, then drop in a letter, a spoonful of yeast or a gold ring and read its weight where the waterline lands. Check it with coins of known weight first.

Preview of Square-egg press
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Turn a hot boiled egg into a perfect cube for lunch boxes and bento
A hot boiled egg is surprisingly soft. Peel it while it is still hot, drop it into this box and press the lid down over it: the lid squeezes the egg into the square chamber, and ten minutes in iced water sets it in shape. Out comes a cube with sharp corners that slices into square egg pieces for sandwiches, stacks in a bento and makes children ask how. It was a craze in Japan in the 1970s.

Preview of Venn diagram snack bowl
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Serve three snacks in overlapping circles whose overlaps hold the mixes
Three round bowls overlap like a Venn diagram, and the crossing walls split them into seven bays: one for each snack on its own, three lens-shaped bays where two of them meet, and a little triangle in the middle where all three meet. SWEET, SALTY and SPICY are engraved in the floors. Fill the overlaps with the mixes (chocolate pretzels, chilli chocolate, spicy crisps) and let the table argue about what belongs where. Relabel it for any three things you like.

Preview of Clear-ice directional freezing box
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Freeze crystal-clear ice from the top down in a thick-walled box
Bar-clear ice is not about boiled or filtered water: it is about which way it freezes. In an ordinary tray the water freezes from every side at once and traps air and minerals in a cloudy middle. This box has 5 mm air-filled walls and stands on feet, so the cold can only get in through the open top. The ice grows straight down and pushes the bubbles ahead of it, leaving a clear block on top and a small cloudy plug at the bottom that you lift out before it freezes. Cut the block into cubes or spheres with a bread knife.

Preview of Egg float-test freshness cup
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Check how fresh an egg is by whether it lies, stands or floats
Every egg has a little air cell that grows as it ages, so an old egg slowly turns into a float. Fill the cup with cold water and lower an egg in. Lying flat on the bottom by FRESH: perfect for poaching. Standing on its point by USE SOON: fine for baking or hard-boiling. Floating up by BIN: throw it out. The tall, narrow cup takes one egg at a time and the three levels are raised in green, gold and red.

Preview of Conveyor-belt sushi party tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Slide little sushi plates round an oval track like a conveyor-belt bar
Kaiten-zushi at home. A 44 mm track runs right round an oval tray, past a central island for the soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. Load little plates of sushi onto the track, and the guests push the train round, taking what they like as it passes, just as in a conveyor-belt sushi bar. It works for tapas, dim sum and dessert bites too.

Preview of Ethylene ripening bell
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Ripen a hard avocado overnight by trapping a banana's ethylene under a bell
Ripe bananas give off ethylene, the gas that tells fruit to ripen. Under this bell it cannot escape. Put a hard avocado, pear, kiwi or peach on the lid with a ripe banana beside it, turn the bell over them and the fruit is ready in one or two days instead of a week. Flip it back over to store it. RIPEN is raised on the lid, which doubles as the plate.

Preview of Shake-up ice-cream maker
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Make ice cream in ten minutes of shaking with ice and salt
No machine needed. Pour 200 ml of cream, a spoon of sugar and a drop of vanilla into the centre cup. Pack the 20 mm jacket round it with crushed ice and two big spoons of salt, screw the lid on, wrap it in a tea towel and shake or roll it across the floor for ten minutes. Salt drops the melting point of the ice to about minus 10 degrees, cold enough to freeze the cream as it churns. SHAKE is raised on the front.

Preview of Oldest-first tin dispenser
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Load tins at the top and take them from the bottom so the oldest is used first
Shops rotate stock so nothing goes out of date; this tower does it at home. New tins go in at the top and drop down the stack, and you always take the bottom one through the arch at the front, which is always the oldest. A slot up the front shows how many are left, so you know when to buy more. OLDEST FIRST is raised on the front.

Preview of Crisp-or-chewy cookie jar pair
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Keep crisp cookies crisp and soft cookies soft in two sealed jars
Crisp and chewy cookies spoil each other in one jar: moisture moves from the soft ones to the crisp ones until they are all limp. These are two jars joined at the hip, each with its own lid, so their air never mixes. A silica sachet keeps the CRISP side snapping; a slice of bread in the CHEWY side keeps brownies and soft cookies soft for days, as the cookies take moisture from the bread.
