Clear-ice directional freezing box

Freeze crystal-clear ice from the top down in a thick-walled box

Bar-clear ice is not about boiled or filtered water: it is about which way it freezes. In an ordinary tray the water freezes from every side at once and traps air and minerals in a cloudy middle. This box has 5 mm air-filled walls and stands on feet, so the cold can only get in through the open top. The ice grows straight down and pushes the bubbles ahead of it, leaving a clear block on top and a small cloudy plug at the bottom that you lift out before it freezes. Cut the block into cubes or spheres with a bread knife.

What’s in it

  • Rectangular, 120 × 120 × 115 mm, with 5.0 mm walls
  • Raised square base
  • Raised text: “CLEAR ICE”

How to print it

PETG with 5 mm walls and 15% infill so the walls trap air. Fill to 2 cm below the rim, freeze for about 20 hours, then lift the block out before the bottom freezes.

Prints as shown on its floor, no supports.

Filament: at most about 117 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $2.33 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).
