MAIN PURPOSE: Fix plant canes to a balcony railing
Snaps onto a round balcony handrail up to 43 mm and holds a 12 mm cane upright beside it: two clamps per cane turn a rented balcony into a trellis for tomatoes, beans or sweet peas, with no drilling and no wire round the railing.

MAIN PURPOSE: Water grow-bag plants at the roots
Press it 3 cm into a grow bag round a tomato or pepper: water poured inside soaks down to the roots instead of running off the plastic, and the open grid floor lets you top up with extra compost for a deeper root run.

Push one in at each corner of a bed: the hose slides round the curved head as you pull it along, instead of dragging across the bed and flattening the plants, and the upturned crescent tips stop it riding over the top.

MAIN PURPOSE: Tell solar time from a string shadow
A sundial whose gnomon is a taut string: tie a cord from the hole at the front to the hole at the top of the fin, and its shadow falls on the engraved hours. Set for about 50 degrees north; face the fin due north and read local solar time.

MAIN PURPOSE: Scatter sound reflections in a small studio
A one-dimensional diffuser for a home studio: seven steps whose heights follow the quadratic-residue sequence for the prime 7 scatter mid and high reflections evenly instead of bouncing them straight back, taming flutter echo. Hang a row on the wall behind the speakers.

MAIN PURPOSE: Cast up and down light from an LED puck
Stick a battery LED puck light to the inside of the back wall and hang the sconce on two screws: light washes up through the open top and down through the floor opening onto the wall, while a soft glow leaks through the slotted front. No wiring needed.

MAIN PURPOSE: Spin in the wind as a garden mobile
An S-rotor that turns in the faintest breeze from any direction: hang it floor up from a fishing swivel through the centre hole, and the two offset half-blades work like a Savonius turbine, flashing round as the wind pushes one and slips past the other.

MAIN PURPOSE: Mark hour rings on a candle
Turns a plain 22 mm dinner candle into a candle clock: slide the sleeve over the top with the wick through the floor hole and score a ring through each slit. The marks sit 25 mm apart, about an hour of burning each, so the flame counts down an evening.
