Preview of Windowsill Aeolian harp
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Let the wind play an eerie chord on strings stretched over a sound box in an open window
The Aeolian harp was a Romantic-era wonder: a box of strings placed in a half-open sash window that the draught plays by itself. Wind passing over a string makes it vibrate in shimmering overtones, rising and falling with the gusts, a sound Coleridge wrote a poem about. String this sound box with fishing line over its two bridges, all tuned to one low note, and lay it across an open window. On a breezy day it sings a ghostly chord without anyone touching it.

Preview of Salt-dance sound visualiser
By Krypto

Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch salt jump into patterns on a membrane over a phone speaker
Sound is invisible until you give it something to move. Slide a phone in through the slot, stretch cling film tight over the top like a drum skin and sprinkle on a little salt. Play a tone-generator app and sweep slowly from 100 to 600 Hz: at certain notes the salt suddenly leaps into rings, stars and grids as the membrane vibrates in sections, and between them it goes still. These are the patterns, called cymatics, that Ernst Chladni showed with a violin bow in 1787.

Preview of Ocean-wave drum
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Tilt a sealed drum of beads slowly to hear surf breaking on a beach
Ocean drums are an old sound-effects trick, used in theatres and music therapy. A handful of steel beads lies inside a wide, flat drum. Tilt it slowly and the beads roll across the wave-ridged floor in a long rushing hiss, exactly like a wave running up the sand; tip it back and the wave draws away. Shake it for rain, roll it for a storm. Children love it, and it is wonderfully calming at bedtime.

Preview of Vinyl single wash station
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Wash and rinse 7-inch singles on edge in two baths
A two-bath wash station for 7-inch singles. The record stands on edge in the wash bath and is turned by hand through the cleaning fluid, then moved to the rinse bath beside it. The label stays above the liquid, and decades of crackle wash away. WASH and RINSE are raised on the front.

Preview of Conductor's baton case
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Protect a conductor's baton in a music bag
A slim hard case for a conductor's baton, which snaps easily in a bag of scores. The cork handle sits in the wide end, the shaft runs down the narrow channel, and the telescoping lid slides on. BATON is engraved along the top.

Preview of Brass player's care caddy
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Keep valve oil, slide grease and the mouthpiece in one caddy
A care caddy for trumpet, trombone and horn players. Bays hold valve oil, slide cream and the cleaning snake, and the mouthpiece stands upright in its own cup, so it doesn't roll around the case or end up in a pocket.

Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Make a soft surf and rain sound by tilting
A tabletop ocean drum. Pour a few spoonfuls of steel BBs or dry rice into the wide shallow drum and close the screw lid: tilt it slowly and the beads roll round the rim like surf on shingle, quicken it for rain. A calming object for the coffee table that is also a real percussion instrument.

Preview of Carillon Case
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Amplify a paper-strip music box movement
A resonant case for a hand-crank paper-strip music box movement. Screw the movement to the floor, the crank comes out of the side, the punched song strip feeds in at the front and out at the back, and the thin walls and sound port make the little comb far louder and warmer than in your hand.

Preview of Resonance Ring
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Let a singing bowl ring freely on a point rest
A rest for a meditation singing bowl. The bowl sits only on the inner points of the scalloped ring, so almost none of its body touches anything and it rings far longer than on a cushion, while the grip feet keep the ring still when you strike it.

Preview of Kapok
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Stand a flute or recorder upright on its foot joint
A stand for a flute or alto recorder rooted like a rainforest kapok tree. Six plank buttresses flare from the trunk, so a tall, top-heavy instrument stands on a wide footprint that weighs little; the 17 mm peg goes up inside the foot joint and the collar takes its rim.
