Preview of Stepped-height desk tray trio
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced

By Krypto

Preview of Parabolic Wi-Fi booster
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Beam a router's Wi-Fi towards the room that needs it with a foil-lined parabola
A router sprays its signal in every direction, half of it into the wall or the neighbours. Stand its antenna through the hole in this dish, which sits exactly at the focus of the parabolic back wall, line the curve with foil, and the reflector sends that wasted half forward towards the room you aim it at, often adding a couple of bars there. The same geometry works for sound: stand a phone at the focus and its music is beamed forward too.

Preview of Roman wax-tablet notepad
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Write and erase notes on a wax tablet with a stylus, as Roman scribes did
Two thousand years before sticky notes, Romans wrote shopping lists and school sums on wax tablets: scratch letters into the wax with a pointed stylus, then smooth them away with the flat end and start again. Pour coloured beeswax into the tray, keep the stylus in its groove, and slip the lid on to protect it. Warm the wax with a hairdryer to wipe the whole page clean. Endlessly reusable, and oddly satisfying to write on.

Preview of Break-glass emergency chocolate box
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Keep a chocolate bar behind "glass" for genuine desk emergencies
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, BREAK GLASS. Mount it by the desk with a chocolate bar (or a spare phone charger, or headache tablets) displayed behind the window. The "glass" is a sheet of clear plastic that slides in behind the front, so in a real emergency, such as a Monday, a deadline or a meeting that should have been an email, you just lift it out. A great gift for anyone who has ever said "I need chocolate".

Preview of Jastrow illusion twin trays
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Hold pens in two identical curved trays that seem to change size when swapped
These two curved desk trays are exactly the same size, but nobody will believe it. Laid one above the other, the lower one looks clearly bigger. Swap them over and the other one grows. It is the Jastrow illusion, found in 1889: your eye compares the short inner edge of the top curve with the long outer edge of the one below. Use them for pens and clips, and keep a ruler handy for the arguments.

Preview of Fibonacci golden-rectangle desk tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk things into squares that grow by the Fibonacci sequence
A desk tray built from the Fibonacci sequence: squares of 8, 5, 3, 2, 1 and 1 units spiral inward and fit exactly into a golden rectangle, the proportion of the Parthenon and the nautilus shell. The big square takes a notebook, the next a phone, then a stack of sticky notes, then cards, and the two tiny squares hold SIM pins and memory cards. Each bay has its number engraved in the floor, so the spiral reads as you clear it.

Preview of Meshing gear-train desk caddy
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk tools into three gear-shaped pots whose teeth really mesh
Three proper spur gears, each with ten teeth, stand in a row with their teeth genuinely meshed, as if they were about to turn each other. The tall one holds pens, the middle one scissors and rulers, and the short one clips and erasers. It looks like a piece of a giant clock on the desk, and it makes a great gift for an engineer.

Preview of Status-cube pen pot
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Turn a pen pot on its turntable to tell colleagues if you are free
Headphones on does not always mean do not disturb. This pen pot turns on its own turntable base, and each side says something different: FOCUS in red, OPEN in green, BREAK in gold and CALL in blue. Give it a spin so the right word faces the office, and colleagues know whether to come over or send a message instead. It holds your pens either way.

Preview of Tulou round-house organiser
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk things into twelve rooms round a courtyard, like a Fujian tulou
The Hakka people of Fujian built tulou: round earth fortresses where a whole village lived in a ring of identical rooms facing a shared courtyard, with a single gate. This organiser is a little tulou for the desk. Twelve wedge-shaped rooms ring the round courtyard, which takes a cup or a plant, and an arched gate opens into the front room. Give every family member, colour or project its own room.
