Preview of Moon-crater impact tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Drop pebbles into flour and cocoa from marked heights to make lunar craters
How did the Moon get its craters? Fill the tray with 3 cm of flour, dust cocoa over the top, and drop a marble from the 10 cm mark on the back board, then from the 20 cm mark. Each impact punches out a crater and throws white flour across the dark cocoa in bright rays, just like the rays round the crater Tycho. Compare sizes, heights and weights, then smooth it over and start again.

Preview of Stream-table river maker
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch water carve rivers, meanders and a delta in a tray of sand
A geography lesson that builds itself. Fill the tray with damp sand, pour water into the tall cup at the mountain end, and it seeps out through a small hole at the bottom to carve a river down the slope. Watch it meander, cut banks, braid into channels and drop a fan-shaped delta where it reaches the SEA end, where a drain hole lets the water out. Change the slope with a book under the cup and see how a steep river behaves differently from a gentle one.

Preview of UV-bead sunscreen tester
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Prove a sunscreen still works with beads that change colour in sunlight
Is last summer's sunscreen still any good? Fill both dishes with UV colour-change beads, stretch cling film over each, and rub a little sunscreen onto the film over the SPF dish. Put them in the sun: the BARE beads turn bright purple and pink in seconds, while the protected beads stay pale if the sunscreen is working. Try different brands, factors and old bottles, or wipe some off to see why you need to reapply.

Preview of Gummy-bear osmosis lab
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Watch gummy bears grow, shrink or dissolve in four liquids overnight
Put one gummy bear on the millimetre grid in each bay and measure it, then cover them with plain water, salty water, sugary water and vinegar. By morning the water bear has swollen to twice its size as water rushes in through its skin by osmosis, the salty and sugary ones barely change, and the vinegar bear has started to dissolve. Measure them on the grid again and record the results. A classic science experiment in a neat tray.

Preview of Egg-drop challenge pod
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Protect a raw egg in a drop test with rubber-band suspension and a parachute ring
The classic school engineering challenge, turned into a reusable test rig. The egg sits in a round inner cradle, and the holes all over the walls let you thread rubber bands across the pod to hang it like a hammock. Fill the gap with your own crumple zone: straws, foam or popcorn. The ring on the lid takes a parachute. Drop it down the stairwell, open it up and see whether your design held, then change one thing and drop again.

Preview of Layered water-filter science kit
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Clean muddy water through gravel, sand and charcoal layers
A stacking science kit that shows how water treatment works. Three pierced tiers hold gravel, sand and charcoal, and muddy water poured in at the top drips through each layer into the clear cup at the bottom. Children can swap the layer order and see which is best.

Preview of Mineral streak test kit
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Identify minerals with a streak plate, hardness tests and a lens
A field kit for rockhounds and geology students: bays for the classic identification tools, a streak tile, a glass plate, a steel nail and a copper coin for the Mohs scratch test, a magnet and a loupe. MOHS is raised on the lid. Work out what that pebble really is.

Preview of Three-water solar still
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Turn salty, muddy and inky water into clean drops with sunshine
The desert-survival trick as a windowsill experiment. Pour salt water, muddy water and inky water into the three outer bays, stretch cling film over the rim and put a pebble in the middle. The sun evaporates the water, it condenses on the film, runs down to the low point under the pebble and drips into the centre cup clear and fresh, while the salt, mud and ink stay behind. The water cycle, made visible in one sunny afternoon.

Preview of Cabbage-juice pH rainbow plate
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Make a pH rainbow with red-cabbage juice in eight labelled wells
Red-cabbage juice is a natural pH indicator. Put it in each of the eight wells, add lemon, vinegar, cola, water, milk, bicarbonate, soap and antacid as labelled, and the plate turns into a rainbow from pink acid to green alkali. It is the most colourful chemistry lesson a kitchen can give.

Preview of Name-stick picker
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Pick a pupil's name at random from lolly sticks, then move it to DONE
Teachers draw names from a cup of lolly sticks to pick who answers, but the same few sticks keep coming up. This picker has two sides: PICK and DONE. A name moves across once picked, so everyone gets a turn before anyone gets two. It is fair, and children can see that it is.
