Preview of Phone-cam bird feeder
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Feed garden birds while an old phone films them close up
Smart bird feeders with cameras cost a fortune; this one uses the old phone in your drawer. The seed tray sits in front of a covered garage where the phone stands with its camera behind a wide window, about a beak's length from the birds, and the lid keeps the rain off. Start a motion-triggered camera app, and you get close-up videos of every robin, tit and squirrel that visits. SMILE is on the front.

Preview of Saguaro-rib cachepot
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Shade a potted plant with ribs that cast their own shadows, like a cactus
Saguaro cacti survive desert sun partly because their deep pleats shade their own skin. This cachepot borrows the trick: deep vertical ribs round the outside mean much of the surface is always in shadow, so the nursery pot inside stays cooler on a hot balcony. It also makes a striking sculptural pot.

Preview of Hummingbird saucer feeder
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Feed hummingbirds nectar through ports in a saucer lid
A saucer feeder for hummingbirds and sunbirds: nectar sits in the shallow base, and the pierced top tier has eight feeding ports at beak height, too small for bees to reach the syrup. Saucer feeders don't drip like bottle feeders, and the whole thing comes apart for cleaning. NECTAR is raised in red, the colour these birds look for.

Preview of Auricula plant theatre
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Stage small potted plants on two tiers like a Victorian auricula theatre
Victorian gardeners showed off prize auriculas on a tiered stage called an auricula theatre. This one stages a row of small pots in front and a raised row behind, so succulents, violas or herbs on a windowsill each get their own spot in the light.

Preview of Seed germination test tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Test how many saved seeds still sprout before sowing
Before sowing a whole bed with last year's saved seed, test it. Put ten seeds on damp paper in each of the four lanes, close the lid to hold the humidity, and count the sprouts: seven out of ten means 70 % germination, so sow a little thicker. The lid is labelled for the job.

Preview of Concrete planter casting mould
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Cast a concrete planter in the gap between two walls
A mould for casting your own concrete or Jesmonite planter. The outer box and the inner wall form a 15 mm gap all the way round: pour the mix in, let it cure, and you get a modern square planter. Use the mould again for a matching set.

Preview of Flytrap bog planter
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Grow carnivorous plants standing in rainwater
A pot and tray made for Venus flytraps, sundews and pitcher plants, which want wet feet and no minerals. The inner pot drains through the floor holes into a deep tray of rainwater, so the bog stays wet all summer. A reminder to use distilled water only is moulded on the pot.

Preview of Butterfly nectar station
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Feed butterflies sugar water and ripe fruit
A flower-shaped feeding dish for the garden. Butterflies land on bright flowers, so the dish itself is one. Six shallow petal bays hold soaked sponges or sliced fruit, and the centre well holds plain water. Set it on a post or in a flower bed.

Preview of Seed-swap library box
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Share seed packets with the neighbours from a hooded box
A little free library for seeds. Seed packets file upright in three rows under a rain hood that leaves the front open: take a packet, leave a packet. SEED SWAP is raised on the front, and keyholes on the back mount it on a fence or gatepost.
