Preview of Wraps-per-inch yarn gauge
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Identify the weight of an unlabelled yarn
Wind an unlabelled yarn round the stick between the notches, side by side without stretching, and count the wraps: 1 inch or 2 inches gives the WPI that tells lace from DK from chunky. Leftover and hand-spun yarn can be matched to a pattern without guessing.

Preview of Band-weaving rigid heddle
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Weave narrow bands and straps by hand
A Sami-style heddle with nine slots and eight holes: thread the warp alternately and lift or lower the heddle to open the two sheds, weaving narrow bands, straps and belts on the lap with the warp tied to a belt. Seventeen warp ends make a 2 to 3 cm band.

Preview of Paper bead rolling fork
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Roll paper strips into jewellery beads
Slip the narrow end of a paper triangle into the slit, turn the handle and the strip winds into a tight bead around the 7 mm tine; dab glue on the tail and slide the bead off. Magazine pages become jewellery beads without the strip unwinding from a cocktail stick.

Preview of Pottery level-line scribing stand
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Scribe level lines round pots on a banding wheel
Push a pencil through one of three pairs of holes so its tip touches the pot, then turn the banding wheel: the line comes out perfectly level all the way round, ready for wax resist, a glaze dipping line or a decoration band. The foot behind the tower stops it tipping.

Preview of Finger-worn jump-ring opener
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Open jump rings with one pair of pliers
An open ring worn on the index finger with two slots on its crown: hold a jump ring in one slot and twist it open sideways with pliers in the other hand. One tool replaces the second pair of pliers, and the twist keeps rings round instead of pulled apart.

Preview of Hand-knit sock blocker
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Shape hand-knitted socks while they dry
A flat foot form, 220 mm from heel to toe: slip a freshly washed hand-knit sock over it and let it dry, and the sock keeps an even shape and opens up its lace or colourwork pattern. Hang it by the hole while it dries; print two for a pair.

Preview of Tablet weaving cards
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Weave patterned bands with turning cards
A pack of 64 mm square cards with a hole in each corner labelled A to D: thread four warp ends through each card, then turn the stack forwards or backwards to twist the warp and weave patterned bands. Printed cards stay flat and smooth where cardboard frays and catches threads.

Preview of Nesting L walls for mould boxes
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple (set)
MAIN PURPOSE: Build adjustable boxes for silicone moulds
Four identical L walls with one arm set a wall's thickness further out: rotate each by 90 degrees and every inner arm slides inside its neighbour's outer arm, so the four make any mould box from 60 to 180 mm square. Clip the overlaps, seal the base with plasticine and pour silicone or resin.

Preview of Taper-dipping wick comb
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Dip several pairs of taper candles evenly
Lay the comb across the dipping can and drop a looped wick into each V notch, where the slit pinches it: five pairs of tapers hang at an even 30 mm spacing, so they never touch, and every dip goes to the same depth. Lift the whole comb to dip and hang it on two hooks to cool.

Preview of Paper-marbling comb
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Comb floating paint into marbled paper patterns
Twenty-six tines at 10 mm spacing on a 260 mm bar: drag it through paints floating on size and the stones break into the even nonpareil and wave patterns of traditional marbled endpapers. Pins pushed into a strip of wood bend and snag; printed tines stay straight and wash clean.
