Preview of Stop-motion animation stage
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Animate clay figures frame by frame with a phone locked in front of a mini stage
The secret of smooth stop-motion is a camera that never moves. The phone slots upright at the front of this three-walled stage and stays perfectly still while you move a clay figure a hair at a time between frames. Twelve photos make one second of animation. Tape a printed background to the back wall, add a desk lamp from the side, and you have a little film studio for clay, toy figures or paper cut-outs.

Preview of Water-drop splash photo rig
By Krypto
Complexity
Advanced
MAIN PURPOSE: Film crowns and jets of water in slow motion as drops fall into a pool
High-speed photographers spend thousands on splash rigs; this one uses the slow-motion mode on your phone. Water drips steadily from a tiny hole in the cup, held high above the pool on a screw-in column, and each drop that lands throws up a crown of water and then a jet that shoots back up. The phone stands in the slot at the pool's edge, perfectly still and at drop level. Add food colouring to the pool, milk to the dripper, and play the clips back frame by frame.

Preview of Solargraph sun-trail camera
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Record six months of the sun's path on one sheet of photo paper
A camera with a six-month exposure. In a dark room, curl a sheet of ordinary photographic paper round the inside of the back wall, close the lid and tape it. Strap the box to a post or railing facing the sun (south in the northern hemisphere) and leave it from one solstice to the next. When you open it, do not develop the paper: scan it. Every sunny day has burned its own arc across the sky, with the gaps showing the cloudy days, over a ghostly image of the view.

Preview of Smartphone projector with focus slots
By Krypto
Complexity
Multi-part assembly
MAIN PURPOSE: Project a phone screen onto a wall through a magnifying lens
A shoebox cinema, done properly. A magnifying lens fits over the round front port, and the phone stands upright in one of four numbered focus slots inside. Moving it back a slot focuses the picture on the wall like a slide projector, with no sliding parts. The lid blacks out the box so the image is as bright as possible. Lights off, film on.

Preview of Stereoscope card viewer
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: See stereo photo cards in 3D through two lens ports
A modern take on the Victorian stereoscope. You look through two lens ports set the width of your eyes apart, a centre septum stops each eye seeing the other picture, and a stereo card slides into the slot at the back. Two flat photos taken a step apart pop into 3D. Make your own cards with any phone by shooting, stepping sideways and shooting again.

Preview of Cyanotype sun-print frame
By Krypto
Complexity
Simple
MAIN PURPOSE: Press cyanotype paper and objects flat under glass in the sun
A frame for making cyanotypes, the blue sun prints. Coated paper lies on the floor with leaves or lace on top, and a sheet of glass rests on ledges round all four walls to press everything flat. Finger notches front and back lift the glass off without smudging. Ten minutes in the sun, rinse, and the print turns Prussian blue.
