Preview of Jastrow illusion twin trays
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Hold pens in two identical curved trays that seem to change size when swapped
These two curved desk trays are exactly the same size, but nobody will believe it. Laid one above the other, the lower one looks clearly bigger. Swap them over and the other one grows. It is the Jastrow illusion, found in 1889: your eye compares the short inner edge of the top curve with the long outer edge of the one below. Use them for pens and clips, and keep a ruler handy for the arguments.

Preview of Levitating-pencil desk base
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Float a pencil in mid-air on ring magnets, touching only a little end plate
A pencil that hangs in the air above the desk. Disc magnets pressed into the four sockets push up against two ring magnets slid onto the pencil, so it floats with nothing underneath it, held in line by its point resting lightly on the end plate. Flick it and it spins silently for a long time. Glue a coin or a small mirror on the end plate for the smoothest spin.

Preview of Floppy-disk desk tray
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Sort desk bits in a giant 3.5-inch floppy disk
The save icon that outlived the thing it pictures, blown up into a desk tray. A shutter bay along the front takes pens, the big label area holds notes and cards, and 1.44 MB is engraved in the floor. A notched corner stands in for the write-protect tab. Anyone who remembers floppy disks will want one.

Preview of Retro-TV phone stand
By Krypto
Complexity
Medium
MAIN PURPOSE: Stand a phone behind the screen of a retro television
A phone stand shaped like an old cathode-ray television. The phone stands sideways inside and its screen fills the TV's rounded front window, so a video call or a recipe looks as if it is on a 1970s set. CH 3 is under the screen, and the charging cable leaves through the back.
