Observatory Beam

Throw a turnable blade of light across the ceiling

A night light with an observatory roof. Set an LED puck on the round base and lower the drum over it: light escapes only through the slit in the roof, throwing one sharp blade of light up the wall and across the ceiling, and turning the drum on its base sweeps the blade round the room like a telescope dome turning to a new star.

What’s in it

  • Round, Ø 96 mm, 74 mm tall, with 2.4 mm walls
  • 1 hole in the floor
  • Friction-fit lid (prints separately)

How to print it

Opaque matt filament keeps the beam crisp. Print it as shown, then turn it over so the floor becomes the top. The lid is the base; needs a 70 mm LED puck.

Print floor-down as shown, then turn it over to use it. The friction-fit lid and its neck piece print separately; adjust Fit in the Lid tab if it binds.

Filament: at most about 115 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $2.30 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).

Questions

What size is the observatory Beam model?

The observatory Beam model measures Ø 96 mm, 74 mm tall. You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

Usually not.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 115 g of PLA (92.8 cm³ printed solid), roughly $2.30 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

How many parts does it print as?

3 parts. The download lays each part flat in its best print position: Download STL gives one file per part, Download 3MF puts them all on one plate.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
