Pocket gold sluice

Pan for gold, garnets and gemstones in a stream with riffles that trap the heavy grains

A miniature version of the sluice boxes of the gold rushes. Water runs straight through the open-ended channel and carries the light sand away, while anything dense, such as black sand, garnets and gold, drops behind the six riffle bars and stays there. After ten minutes, lift it out level and wash what is trapped behind the riffles into a pan. It also works at home in a tub of water with a bag of gem-mining paydirt.
