Einstein-tile coaster

Protect the table with coasters in the one shape that tiles without repeating

In 2023 an amateur mathematician found the shape people had searched for since the 1960s: the "hat", a single tile that covers a plane completely but never in a repeating pattern. Mathematicians call it an einstein, from the German for one stone. Each coaster is one hat. Lay a set out on the table and they fit together endlessly without the pattern ever repeating. It is a conversation piece, a puzzle and a coaster at once.

What’s in it

  • Custom outline, 110 × 79 × 7 mm, with 2.0 mm walls
  • Custom outline traced from a shape

How to print it

Print a dozen or more in two colours; flip some over to fill the gaps, as the real tiling does.

Prints as shown on its outline, no supports.

Filament: at most about 15.6 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $0.31 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).

Questions

What size is the einstein-tile coaster model?

The einstein-tile coaster model measures 110 × 79 × 7 mm (width × depth × height). You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

No. Print a dozen or more in two colours; flip some over to fill the gaps, as the real tiling does. Prints as shown on its outline, no supports.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 15.6 g of PLA (12.5 cm³ printed solid), roughly $0.31 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
