Blow-tuned Helmholtz resonator jar

Play a clear note by blowing across the lid

A jar that hums a note when you blow across the hole in its screw lid, like blowing over a bottle. At this size it sounds close to middle C. The note is set by the hole and the jar: a wider hole or a shorter jar plays higher, so you can print a set and tune a little chord.

What’s in it

  • Round, Ø 80 mm, 110 mm tall, with 2.4 mm walls
  • 1 hole in the lid
  • Raised text: “BLOW ACROSS”
  • 1 patterned wall panel (raised)
  • Screw-on lid (prints separately)

How to print it

Blow gently across the hole, not into it. Print with 3 walls so the jar rings clearly.

Prints as shown on its floor, no supports. The threaded lid and its neck piece print separately; adjust Fit in the Lid tab if it binds.

Filament: at most about 166 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $3.33 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (a 3MF per part, plus a Bambu Studio / Orca Slicer project with every part on its own plate).

Questions

What size is the blow-tuned Helmholtz resonator jar model?

The blow-tuned Helmholtz resonator jar model measures Ø 80 mm, 110 mm tall. You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

No. Blow gently across the hole, not into it. Print with 3 walls so the jar rings clearly. Prints as shown on its floor, no supports. The threaded lid and its neck piece print separately; adjust Fit in the Lid tab if it binds.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 166 g of PLA (134 cm³ printed solid), roughly $3.33 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

How many parts does it print as?

3 parts. The download lays each part flat in its best print position: Download STL gives one file per part, Download 3MF gives a 3MF per part plus a Bambu Studio / Orca Slicer project with each part on its own plate.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
