In-bed worm tower

Compost kitchen scraps right inside a raised bed through a worm tower

Instead of carrying compost to the plants, bring the compost to the plants. Bury the lower half of this tower in a raised bed, drop in some compost worms and feed it vegetable scraps through the lid. Worms come and go through the windows near the bottom, eating the scraps inside and leaving their rich castings out in the bed around the roots. The lid keeps flies and smells in, and one tower feeds roughly a metre of bed.

What’s in it

  • Rectangular, 80 × 80 × 240 mm, with 2.4 mm walls
  • 5 holes in the floor and walls
  • Raised text: “FEED ME”
  • Lift-off lid (prints separately)

How to print it

It is 240 mm tall, so lower the height on a smaller printer. Bury the bottom half in the bed so the side windows are under the soil, add a handful of compost worms, and feed scraps through the lid.

Prints as shown on its floor, no supports. Large holes in the walls may need supports or good bridging. The lid prints as a separate part, top down.

Filament: at most about 283 g of PLA printed solid (roughly $5.66 at $20 per kg); normal infill uses less.

To get the files, open it in the generator and choose File › Download STL (one file per part) or Download 3MF (every part on one plate).

Questions

What size is the in-bed worm tower model?

The in-bed worm tower model measures 80 × 80 × 240 mm (width × depth × height). You can change every size in the free SO3D.xyz generator before you download it.

Does it need supports?

It may need supports in places.

How much filament does it use?

At most about 283 g of PLA (228 cm³ printed solid), roughly $5.66 of filament at $20 per kg. Normal infill uses less.

How many parts does it print as?

2 parts. The download lays each part flat in its best print position: Download STL gives one file per part, Download 3MF puts them all on one plate.

Can I change it?

Yes. Open it in the SO3D.xyz generator (free, in your browser), change the size, walls, dividers, holes, text or anything else, then download it as STL or 3MF for your slicer.
