Electrolysis rust-removal tank

Strip rust off old tools overnight with washing soda and a battery charger

The restorer's secret for rusty tools. Fill the tank with water and a tablespoon of washing soda per litre, slide scrap steel plates into the slots at each end and connect them to the + clip of a 12 V battery charger. Hang the rusty tool from a rod through the two top holes and connect it to the - clip. Tiny bubbles start at once, and by morning the rust has turned to loose black flakes that wipe off, leaving the clean metal and even the stamped markings underneath untouched.
